Mission Control: Writing Mission Statements

Mission Control: Writing Mission Statements

You should always consult with mission control before taking off with your goal plan. After the first step of defining your vision of where you want to be in life, the next step is to compose your mission statement. This statement will describe what you want now and how it will fit into your long term vision. It will answer the questions of what to do, why you are doing it, and how you will achieve it. A mission statement simply connects the present to the future (your vision).

If you have been involved in writing mission statements, you know that it can be a daunting task. I suggest first creating a vision statement, as you can’t go on a mission without a vision of where you are going. My last post spoke about vision statements, and I shared mine with you:

To become a family-oriented wife & mother working to help others reach their full potential while all along improving myself.

My personal mission statement needs to describe what I want now and how I will get there-connecting the present-day to my long-term vision. My mission statement includes:

SMW Consulting & Advocacy, LLC will help enhance the lives of clients and their families through advocacy, consulting, and education of their disability rights.

This short version of my mission statement is easily memorized, inspirational to me, and covers a portion of my vision (working to help others). In breaking apart the vision statement, you can easily write mission statements for each portion, like I have done here. This is the second step to living your life with intention. There is a lot of excitement and reflection that goes into your personal mission statements, and I would be honored to be part of the process.

My work is fueled by a passion for those living with a disability, and overcoming obstacles daily to learn and grow. I also work with family members or the community who are touched by disability, to help them navigate their family life, parenting, and/or career.

After over a decade serving students in higher education management, and leading a team to goal achievement, I am looking forward to helping you or your child do the same.

Let’s consult mission control together, and then shoot for the stars.

Best Wishes and inspired missions, Shannon
